The Parsons Elab, in partnership with different departments across the university, gathered and visualized the rich history of entrepreneurialism at The New School.

This network graph visualizes the data over 700 New School entrepreneurs. In it we trace their major, degree, year of graduation, title, gender and location.

OUR DATA STRATEGY & VISUALS

 

Initiated in mid-2017, The Genome Project began with the vision to survey and collect information from New School alumni through survey — either digitally, through online form, or through direct mail. Throughout a structured but permeable design research process, combined with a commitment to iterate and reflect on the efficacy of our strategies, the project methodology evolved towards a tech-oriented and data-driven approach. We realized that while we strive ultimately towards a survey distributed across all New School alumni, our intermediary and best possible outcome would be derived from leveraging public data, namely, through LinkedIn which provides documentation around alumni groups, the alumni network, their jobs, current and past companies, bios, skills, awards, and further professional details.

 

 

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR NUMBERS:

 

Get a sense of our current status and numbers we've generated. Many of these number snapshots change day-to-day: the number of registered alumni changes annually, the number of entrepreneurial alumni evolve to reflect current job titles, more companies are founded, etc. These numbers are listed June 1st, 2018, and give insight into the variable data sets we're working with and the potential reach we could attain.

MAPPING ENTREPRENEURS WORLDWIDE 

 

Our primary visualization created in Fall 2018 was mapping all of collected entrepreneurs from The New School Career Insights page. The first round of data collected from the public profiles included listed location. We are careful to not disclose and private or sensitive information of collected alumni.
